Some breeders, due to great demand and celebrity status, have decided to try mixing purebred dogs in an attempt to get the best qualities from two different breeds. These designer breeds utilize only the smaller breed sizes, such as toy or miniature, as this is what fits into a celebrity's purse. The resulting dogs are referred to as mixed breeds, though the term used to be a nice way to say mutt. Obviously, there can be some pitfalls with this kind of breeding, as you never really know what you will get.

The Pomapoo is a good example of one of these mixed breeds. The exceptional looks of the Pomeranian and the good disposition of the Poodle, either toy or miniature, makes a very desirably pet. Though it is pretty easy to guess what you will get when breeding two purebred dogs of the same breed, it is not so easy with two different breeds.

This is because these are traits that are often carried down, as these characteristics are more dominant in the Pomeranian than most other small breeds. Another thing that often stays the same is the color of the fur, because the Pomeranian colors often override the other dogs' color. Although with some breeds, such as the Pug, the face and nose structure will be less like the Pomeranian and more like a Pug's.

These new breeds have been dubbed hybrids and because they are not purebreds the American Kennel Club does not recognize them as a standard breed and exclude them from all sanctioned competitions. A new association called the American Canine Hybrid Club has been established to control the proper breeding and maintain standards for these purebred mixed breeds.
