Advanced Canine Coaching Points Meant for Conditioning The Canine

Akeisha wrote to me with some very smart questions. I've included her letter (and my responses) below:

Hi,

It's Akeisha again.

I do see what you mean if it's on repeatedly the canine can soon forget it's on and then can behave regardless. Ok, therefore the canine never wears a buckle collar once more? This is what irks me. I want to be in a position to control the canine irrespective of what collar is on not simply the pinch or it could be no collar in any respect and therefore the dog still behaves. What if the owner for some reason takes off the collar then they place the buckle collar on for ID however then forget the pinch collar? Then there is no control.

[Adam Replies] WRONG! The dog gets conditioned. Kick off the collar for awhile. Doesn't matter.

Does one ever within the training return to the buckle collar when months of what you suggest with a dog that is pleased with doing the commands?

[Adam Replies] Yes, the canine does the command as a result of he's happy and he likes it. But eventually, there will be one thing that tempts him. This can be where conditioning comes in.

Think of it like this: You have lived in the same house for ten years, right? You rise up in the middle of the night and you reach for the light switch that is to the LEFT of the door. Pretty soon, you get conditioned to reach out to the LEFT of the door.

Someday you travel and keep in a hotel. You awaken in the center of the night and reach out to the LEFT of the door for the switch... even though you cognitively saw that the switch is on the RIGHT.

In fact, you will rouse for many nights-- maybe even weeks or months-- and still reach out to the LEFT, even though the switch is currently on the right. Some folks will continue progressing to the LEFT for the remainder of their lives. Some will begin attending to the right.

Those folks need to be reinforced. Get it?

Motivational corrections if on the proper dog won't frighten them or build them hate you I recognize however are not there other ways in which except using the collar that will eventually be established thought coaching that will permit you to require the collar off and have control?

[Adam Replies] Yeah, this approach you'll take the collar off and have management, ONCE THE DOG IS CONDITIONED. But eventually you will have to travel back and reinforce, for most dogs. And definitely if you begin expecting to work the canine around new distractions that it's never been proofed around, like chickens if the dog has never seen chickens.

Look, I don't make the rules. The canine isn't a robot that you'll suddenly say, "He is done" and expect him to act consistently for the rest of his life. Like any relationship you have got with another person, boundaries need to be established and maintained. The dog is like your wife or husband... they can eventually test you.

Last query, how will the canine not understand the don't have it on since it feels a heap different than the buckle? Its like my id around my neck at school I've got gotten used to it however I do realize when it's off? Simply for the record I've got no problem with pinches, several members in my 4-H club use them and that they work nice on the right dog.

[Adam Replies] As a result of the approach you should be using the pinch collar is that the canine (since he has restricted reason and logic) does not KNOW that it is the pinch collar that enables you to administer him smart corrections. However it's more than the pinch collar. If I put the canine in an exceedingly variety of small yards, with no collar on ... and I'm able to chase him down and make him come back to me, if he doesn't return when I call... then the canine can learn THE UNDERLYING PREMISE that I will build him do it, if he doesn't. Therefore, the pinch collar and the long line make my job easier, however ultimately, the dog knows (or he thinks a minimum of) that I am a person of my word and once I tell him to do something: If he does not do it, I am going to make him do it. And his life will be a heap a lot of fun if he will it willingly. Thus the canine starts to extrapolate this principle to alternative commands, too.
